OBESITY AND WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Obesity is one of the serious problems all over the world and becoming more serious in view of the consciousness. Excess body weight can cause many health problems, including joint injury, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Cancers of the colon, rectum and prostate are prevalent among overweight men. Breast, uterine, ovarian, gall bladder, and bile duct cancers are found more commonly in overweight women.

The chronic diseases associated with obesity consume billions of health care dollars, with no end in sight. Studies show that sudden death occurs 13 times more often in people who are overweight. The US Public Health Service reports that approximately 300,000 Americans die each year from obesity. Not only is this a frightening fact for adults, but the number of children who are now classified as obese is also on the rise. Reaching and maintaining a reasonable weight is probably the healthiest lifestyle choice that a person can make. The best way to lose and maintain weight is through exercise combined with reasonable caloric intake.

Lowering the amount of fat in daily diet both helps in weight loss and reduces the likelihood of heart disease, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Increasing fiber intake may also help with weight loss, as fiber is more filling than many other food components. Some fibers appear especially helpful with weight loss, including glucomannan and Psyllium, which is discussed below. Weight reduction is the goal of many people. Consequently, there is always a new diet or diet product that is being touted by some person, usually a Hollywood superstar, to help you reduce your weight. Usually, these are useless.

Mostly these are harmless. But in the case of the dietary supplement Ma Huang, or Ephedra, the side effects can be devastating, and even deadly. These side effects include high blood pressure, insomnia, heart arrhythmias, thyroid disorders, and even heart failure. Ephedra acts as a stimulant, with amphetamine-like effects, including addiction. There are a few natural aids to weight reduction that are completely safe and can be used with confidence. Here we will highlight some of those ingredients.

Fiber

Is an important adjunct to weight reduction programs. When taken before a meal, it has the effect of causing a full feeling, thus curbing appetite. Additionally, Psyllium based-fibers that are taken before a meal can help lower cholesterol levels. One specific type of fiber, glucomannan, has the ability to absorb water and swell to 50 times its original volume, again creating a full feeling.

Some studies have also reported improved glucose control and decreased cholesterol from glucomannan. Green Tea Extract Is one of the most promising weight reduction agents to come along in some time. Recent studies have shown that green tea extract standardized to 90 mg of epigallocatechin gallate can increase the 24-hour energy expenditure in human subjects. It is thought to do this by inhibiting the enzyme that causes the breakdown of norepinephrine, thus causing an increase in the metabolic rate. It has also been shown to increase the rate of brown fat metabolism. Both of these effects are unrelated to the caffeine content.

Zinc and Chromium

Chromium in the forms of picolinate and polynicotinate, has also been shown in some studies to be beneficial for weight loss. It helps modulate blood sugar levels, and also may preserve lean muscle mass. It has also become very popular for weight reduction. Lypotrim also contains Zinc, protein bound chromium and that both are very important minerals for the energy metabolism.

Chromium can increase the insulin sensitivity and can help to maintain normal energy metabolism especial the sugar metabolism. Many research data have proved the effectiveness and the importance of Chromium and zinc in normal energy metabolism. According to the research data, 90% of population in US might have insufficient daily intake of chromium. This product contains 83% of Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) of chromium and 67% of zinc.

5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP)

Is a serotonin precursor with some antidepressant activity, which has been shown in several small studies to promote weight loss. It has been studied in diabetic and non-diabetic patients, and promotes a feeling of fullness and cuts down on sugar cravings. It reduced both total calorie and carbohydrate intake in obese patients. 5-Hydroxytryptophan should not be taken at the same time as antidepressants, as side effects due to excess serotonin may occur.

Phaseolamin

Inhibits the activity of carbohydrate digesting enzymes in the GI tract (the enzyme that breaks down starches into simple sugars for absorption). This leaves the carbs in a state that is too large to be absorbed.

Phaseolamin 2250™, the first clinically proven standardized supplement from white kidney beans. It has been demonstrated to inhibit the carbohydrate digesting enzyme alpha amylase so that significant portions of the carbohydrates you eat are not broken down into sugars and absorbed. In clinical studies, subjects using Phaseolamin 2250 lost an average of 1_ pounds of fat per week.

The name Phaseolamin 2250 came about because 1 gm of Phaseolamin 2250 neutralized 2250 starch calories using a modified USP test method.

Chitosan

Chitosan Fat Blocker attaches to fat and cholesterol in the stomach and prohibits its absorption in the digestive tract which may facilitate weight reduction, lower cholesterol levels, stimulate regular bowel movements, heal ulcers, prevents irritable bowel syndrome, regulate blood pressure, and promote the growth of healthy intestinal flora.

Chitosan Fat Blocker helps prevent the metabolism of fats and decreases cholesterol absorption. Chitosan Formula helps prevent the absorption of fats into the digestive system. The proper functioning of the intestinal tract depends upon the presence of adequate dietary fiber. Only Natural’s Chitosan provides a balance of crude and dietary fiber from natural sources. Chitosan, Psyllium, Soy Fiber prevents the metabolism of fats and decreases cholesterol absorption helping to maintain a healthy intestinal tract, while reducing the intake of fats into the body.

Chitosan with a high degree of deacetylation increases the capacity to bind dietary fat and bile acids. Four trials compared chitosan plus diet with placebo plus diet. Four of four trials showed significantly more weight loss with chitosan than with diet alone, with a weighted mean difference of 3.28 kg (95% CI 1.5 to 5.1). Of these, two of two trials showed significantly larger decreases in blood pressure with chitosan, and three of three trials showed significantly larger decreases in blood lipids with chitosan. Two of two trials reported ease of bowel movements with chitosan. The fifth trial did not test for differences between treatments (chitosan plus diet, chitosan alone or diet alone). However, weight loss appeared better with chitosan plus diet.

The supplements listed above are safe (in the appropriately recommended dosages) and can help assist one in achieving their goal of weight reduction. Although none of these alone is ideal, the combination of these products may yield greater results then the individual. We cannot stress enough the importance of a healthy diet, adequate water intake, exercise, and appropriate nutritional supplementation. With any weight loss attempt, a Multivitamin supplement is recommended, since the reduced caloric intake means the body may not get all the vitamins and minerals it needs as easily.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar and weight loss health benefits have been utilized for centuries. This completely natural way to shed pounds is a tried and true home remedy used throughout the world. It is generally believed that the nutrients, enzymes, and organic acids in apple cider vinegar cause weight reduction by acting as an appetite suppressant, by increasing your body’s metabolic rate, by reducing water retention, and by helping you maintain a feeling of well-being.

L – Carnitine

The primary function of L-Carnitine in the body, is to regulate fat oxidation (burning). L-Carnitine is responsible for transporting fat to the fat furnace in our cells called mitochondria. Unless fat makes it to the mitochondria, it cannot be oxidized, no matter how much you exercise or diet. Many studies have been done to determine the effectiveness of L-Carnitine for fat burning.

Evidence, more so than not, has suggested that when used correctly, along with a balanced diet (adequate protein, essential fats, and fiber), it works. The addition of L-Carnitine in Lypotrim formula synergizes the effect of other ingredients in Lypotrim. Inositol Inositol is also known as vitamin B8. Inositol helps your liver break down fats in the body, which is how it got its reputation for aiding weight loss. It is also a lipotropic agent, so inositol also might redistribute existing body fat during weight loss. When taken before bedtime, theoretically it might help your body burn fat while you sleep.

Gymnema Sylvestre

Gymnema Sylvestre is an Indian Herb recognized for centuries. Gymnema Sylvestre can help balance blood sugar, control cravings and the sugar passes through the system. Gymnema Sylvestre, also known as Gurmar and Meshashringi, whose Hindi name literally mean “sugar destroyer”, has been used in Ayurveda for several centuries to regulate sugar metabolism. Because Gymnema has a molecular structure similar to sugar, it blocks and inhibits a large percentage of sugar absorption and has the incredible ability of severing ones desire for sugar. Clinical studies from Japan evaluated the effects of Gymnema Sylvestre on plasma and liver lipids. Extract of Gymnema Sylvestre leaves induced apparent fat digestibility, though not the protein digestibility. Results showed that Gymnema sylvestre extract also was efficient to reduce the levels of plasma triglycerides and cholesterol influencing over a wide range of lipoid metabolism, as well as to suppress body weight gain, and accumulation of fat drops in kidney and other tissues. It is found that Gymnema sylvestre has similar results to those of chitosan, even if they are given together.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is known to reduce blood sugar, relieves constipation, suppresses appetite & promotes weight loss. Fenugreek seed has several effects in carbohydrate metabolism. It has also been traditionally used in treatment of diabetic subjects. Fenugreek has a direct effect on glutathione increasing its plasma levels, as well as on glutathione s-transferase enzyme in the liver, increasing its activity. An active amino acid found in Fenugreek seeds is 4-hydroxysoleucine, which also shows interesting effects on increased insulin production and can also mimic insulin, restoring the normal levels of sugars in the blood.

L – Methionine

Is an essential sulphur-bearing amino acid. In the body, it converts to L-cysteine and therefore is potentially beneficial in liver detoxification and in neutralizing toxins. L-Methionine is considered important for liver fat metabolism and energy production.

Ilex paraguariensis

It is commonly found in the market as a tea. Its alternative name is Yerba Mate, which is known for its multiple medicinal and healthful properties. It is a medicinal tonic that causes mental clarity, improved digestion and appetite, boosts immune system, increased stamina and energy and also has an activity on blood detoxification. It contains caffeine, theophylline and theobromine. It is mild stimulant. In a study conducted in 2001, 47 healthy overweight adults, researchers found that taking a mixed herbal preparation (containing yerba mate, guarana, and damiana) three times daily for 45 days induced significant weight loss. It gives the feeling of fullness to the research subjects that lessen the food intake. In a study conducted in 2009, they found out that Yerba Mate modulate several obesity – related gene expression that results to weight loss.

Lagerstroemia Speciosa

It is also known as Banaba which is abundant in tropical countries, traditionally its roots are used for stomach problems and leaves are made into tea to treat diabetes mellitus and to induce weight loss. It regulates the sugar metabolism in the body that promotes weight loss. It contains a good amount of dietary fibers that will help in providing healthy digestion and metabolism. The Corosolic Acid extracted from the leaves and flower it contains has the ability to delay or reduce carbohydrate absorption.

Choline

It is a water soluble nutrient which is essential to the body. It is closely similar to the B – vitamins family. One of its most important actions is the transportation of fats into cell mitochondria and cell membrane building. It is vital in numerous bodily process and functions such as brain function, nerve function, cellular process and metabolic process in the liver.

Choline promotes faster rate of lipolysis that results to increased fat burned in the system. It is done by promoting the transportation of dietary fats throughout the body to your cells so they are promptly burned for energy.

Choline can be derived from eggs, liver, broccoli and fish and other food sources. Garcinia cambogia Is a tropical fruit that contains Hydroxycitric acid, which in animal studies has been shown to increase metabolism and promote weight loss. It is thought to suppress appetite and may interfere with the body’s ability to produce and store fat. It is completely natural and safe, and no significant side effects have been reported. It has had limited use in human clinical trials, with mixed results. It is becoming an increasingly popular weight reduction supplement. It blocks the enzyme called citrate lyase which is the one responsible for converting carbohydrates into fats and sugars.

Weight Management

How much you eat and what you eat: The primary cause of being overweight is eating more than your body needs. In any weight management program it is extremely important.

  1. To manage how much you eat.
  2. What you eat and how you prepare your food.
  3. Regular Exercise.

Tips:

  • You have to control your calorie intake. In particular, cut down on fat, which has more than twice as many calories, gram for gram, as carbohydrate. Also fat tends to be stored whereas carbohydrate tends to be burned.
  • Reduce your consumption of high-fat foods such as full milk, cream, butter, fatty meats, fried potatoes, crisps and nuts and substitute ideally with foods such as pasta , boiled potatoes, cereals and fruit.
  • Choose reduced fat or low fat types of milk, cheeses and spreads.
  • Grill rather than fry.
  • Boil rather than roast.
  • Avoid the consumption of foods containing large amounts of hidden fat and Sugar, e.g. some biscuits and cakes, substituting with fruit or ‘lite’ snacks.
  • Avoid missing meals.
  • Always eat breakfast if you can.
  • Remember alcoholic beverages often contain a lot of calories.

Exercise

Exercise is an important part of any energy balance program and it is recommended that you follow an exercise program appropriate for your age, weight and state of health. The energy used in normal daily activities is important in helping to maintain a normal body weight. Choose activities which use more energy, such as using the stairs and not the lift, walking to the shops, swimming and cycling. Make time during your day for some extra physical activity.
